Poem: Pray

Pray

That I can live my life with you, is all that I can pray.

That I can learn to love you more, every passing day,

That you will find fulfilment, in all the things we do,

That we enjoy the happiness, which lives in love so true,

That when you go to heaven, I’m waiting there for you.

by H J Furl

Note: Pray is the poem which opens Heathen, the first story in Basque - Love Stories.

Poem: It's Crying Gas, Girl

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

I know Burl, my name’s Furl, my lips curl, I’m your girl!

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

This gross mask, your big ask, the gas flask, my head cask!

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

I hate this, I can’t hiss, I can’t kiss, I can’t piss!

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

The gas stinks, my face pinks, one eye winks, my hair kinks!

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

It’s all lies, my heart cries, all hope dies, I wet my thighs!

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

My eyes glaze, with red haze, my legs laze, in your maze!

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

The hopes and fears of all my years are lost within my dying tears!

It’s Crying Gas, Girl!

I’m Crying Gas Girl!

I’m Crying Girl!

I’m Girl!

I’m!

I!

Dedication

When I wrote this and posted it on my website, I never thought I would need these words again,

Dedication

Of Habitat, and Hope

The anti-mermaid lives outside her mythical habitat, struggling to swim against the tide of modern life. She’s Covid, coughing, gasping for air, drowning in an alien murky sea of despair, an ocean of grief, pain and sorrow. But she is tough: a fighter, a lover of the good, a kind nurse, a caring soul, an example to us all. Megan will make it through, grow a mermaid’s tail of her own, and live to be free. Happy. Content. Swimming in the warm swell of love which tends us all. Her underlying torrent of strength, her bubbly, frothy, inexhaustible hope a driven will to overcome the odds that will surely see us through.

For the Ill, the heroic Nurses and Doctors in our Hospitals and the Carers in our Homes.

Poem: Caversham Yard

Caversham Yard

(with apologies to Max Bygraves)

A mouse lived in a kitchen in Caversham Yard,

Old buildings with mice in are hardly surprising,

He thought every evening: how lucky we are,

Living in a restaurant in Caversham Yard.

I saw a mouse! Where?

There on the stair,

There on the stair, right there,

A little mouse with germs on,

Well, I declare!

Going plip-plip pity plop on the stair, right there.

*****

This mouse he got married and took him a wife,

His mouse-hood was rising, it’s hardly surprising,

They thought every night-time: how lucky we are,

Breeding in a bedroom in Caversham Yard.

I saw two mice! Where?

There on the cheese,

Down on their knees, right there,

A mouse without protection,

Well, if you please!

Going drip-drip pity drop everywhere, right there,

*****

These mice started breeding like ants in a hill,

He took no precautions. She’d mislaid her Pill,

And they squeaked every night-time: how lucky we are,

Breeding like vermin in Caversham Yard.

I saw some mice! Where?

There in the flour,

Eating our flour, right there.

Some mice with salmonella,

Well, I declare!

Going plip-plip pity plop everywhere, right there.

*****

A rat lived in a hotel in Caversham Yard,

Old buildings with rats in are hardly surprising,

He thought every morning: how lucky we are,

Living in a bedroom in Caversham Yard.

I saw some rats! Where?

Eating a pear,

Eating a pair, right there,

They contravene Food Safety,

Well, I declare!

Going plip-plip pity plop on the pear, right there.

*****

The restaurant has closed down, the kitchen is bare,

A hotel with mice in, it’s hardly surprising,

The owner’s in prison, the chef got the sack,

The food has gone mouldy, the chutney’s turned black,

We feed every night-time, how lucky we are,

Living in the ruins of Caversham Yard…

I saw a bird! Where?

There on the stair,

There on the stair,

Right there!

I think it’s called a pigeon,

Well, I declare!

Going plip plip-pity plop on the stair!

*****

The meals were delicious, the waiters were nice,

There’s no-one alive now,

But a whole load of mice!

Think TWICE!

Poem: The Blue Pool

The Blue Pool

A young man sipped limoncello, in a bar in the village square,

He was lonely and heartbroken, you would often find him there,

His heart was filled with sorrow, he felt twisted and torn inside,

When a waitress in a black dress, came and whispered as he cried,

‘Do you know there’s a blue pool, born out of the mountain streams?

Meet me by there, close to twilight, and I’ll conjure up your wildest dreams.

Come to the blue pool, and we’ll dance in my fountain of love,

We’ll kiss and cuddle, then I’ll show you what dreams are made of.’

Well, her brown eyes burned with passion, her red lips glowed so bright,

That the man’s mind moiled in torment, while his heart craved for the night.

Also, it was rumoured, in the valley far and wide, that a dark girl with a black curl,

Kept a secret deep inside.

For who knows what secret lay deep in her heart,

Was her soft kiss pure magic, or tragic; to tear his soul apart?

*****

The young man climbed the stone steps, above the netted lemon grove,

Driven by his deep desire, to reveal the girl’s treasure trove.

The hill path turned to rubble, the night breeze blew so cool,

As the blue girl lay in waiting, for her solitary fool.

He found her bathed in moonlight, on a boulder by the waterfall,

As the blue pool cast a sparkle, where there was no light at all.

The young man was beguiled, by the girl’s kiss, deep and slow,

Why the boy fell for her witchcraft, only he will ever know.

Also, it was rumoured in the valley far and wide, that the girl with eyes cruel,

Kept a secret deep inside.

‘Swim in my blue pool, and we’ll dance in my fountain of love,

We’ll kiss and cuddle, then I’ll show you what dreams are made of.’

Well, her blue eyes, they entranced him, her lips froze with delight,

As the young man stripped his clothes off, and he dived into the night.

Blue light spread around him, sparkling ice lit up his skin,

And a dark patch spread like blue ink, taking his lost soul within.

For who knows what secret lay deep in her heart,

Was her cold kiss pure magic, or tragic: to tear his life apart?

*****

A young man sipped an espresso, in a café in the village square,

He was hopelessly romantic, you would often find him there,

His heart was filled with passion, he felt hungry and bold inside,

When the waitress in the black dress, came and whispered as she lied,

‘Do you know, there’s a blue pool, born out of the mountain streams?

Meet me by there, close to twilight, and I’ll conjure up your wildest dreams.’

‘Come to the blue pool, and we’ll dance in my fountain of love,

We’ll kiss and cuddle, then I’ll show you what dreams are made of.’

Well, her green eyes burned with passion, her lips shimmered with light,

As the young man lost his senses, and he dived into the night…

Poem: The Blue Girl (18+ Science Horror!)

Hello, I write poetry, occasionally, when I feel strongly, about something, together with lots of stories which are not featured on the website. For a change, I will start posting them here for you to read, as a thank you for your kind support. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, here is The Blue Girl:

The Blue Girl by HJ Furl

As sole survivor in this zone, I walk up to the tanks alone,

To estimate the bodies lost, extrapolate the human cost,

Of nuclear warfare on the few, who live here in the fluid blue.

The sludge inside the first urn stinks, of rotting flesh, violets and pinks,

I wonder if, suspended here, this poor boy used to dream or fear,

The mushroom cloud that flourished here, as he clung to his girl… so near.

The blue girl floats within her womb, the test tube-capsuled, frozen tomb,

Inverted, nude, her lifeform squirms, her body warming up in terms,

Of radiation-blasted heat, which peeled her skin off like a sheet,

Her expectations sore-denied, her liver grilled, her kidneys fried,

As she concedes the life that died, when doctors sealed her fate inside,

A stasis tube of forlorn hope. I close my eyes, I claw and grope,

Until I find her umbilical cord, and say the sacrificial word,

Her cryogenic dreams decay, as I pull her sweetheart… away.

On this day, I give you my mind, body and soul.

‘On this day, I give you my mind, heart, body and soul. I promise I will fly with you, hand in hand, wherever our journey leads us, together, living, dying, loving, forever and ever.’
